THE APATOA STORY · RAIATEA

A family story,
a place like no other

Between the mountains and the lagoon, Nathalie and Didier Candalot envisioned a place that reflects who they are.

HOW APATOA TOOK SHAPE

A different way to live within the landscape

On a former coconut plantation, Nathalie and Didier envisioned a place that gives Raiatea’s natural beauty room to flourish, between tropical gardens, the beach and the lagoon.

From the first sketches to construction, the project evolved to meet the challenges of building on a remote island. Apatoa gradually took on its own distinctive form, while staying true to the original vision: a comfortable, memorable stay with a close connection to the outdoors.

With their shell-inspired silhouettes, the villas now bring this vision to life: an independent hotel rooted in its surroundings.

A family vision shaped with heart

“Welcome to a place born of our passion.

This property is much more than a hotel; it is the culmination of a family vision shaped with heart. As independent hoteliers, we have been personally involved and had the freedom to design every space and imagine every detail, from the architecture to the experience our guests enjoy today.

Deeply in love with French Polynesia, we wanted to honour this welcoming land by subtly weaving its vibrant culture and abundant natural beauty into our property.

Our hotel concept grew out of our own journeys around the world. Along the way, we gathered inspiration, brought together the best ideas and took note of the most thoughtful service to unite them here at APATOA. This place reflects what we consider ideal hospitality: a blend of international elegance and local authenticity.

We are delighted to share our vision of travel with you and hope you will feel the dedication and enthusiasm we have poured into every corner of this retreat.”

A FAMILY STORY

An identity shaped by the family

Apatoa also bears the imprint of Nathalie and Didier’s three children.

Arthur, their eldest son, designed the hotel’s logo, drawing inspiration from seashells, sunsets and the energy of the islands.

Léna played a significant role in the construction engineering and the hotel’s commercial launch.

Gabin, the youngest, is a mixologist and bartender who created many of the cocktails on the C.O.B. menu.

Each, in their own way, has helped bring this family project to life.

THE APATOA SPIRIT

Our values

OUR APPROACH

Caring for people and place

At Apatoa, guest comfort and care for our surroundings go hand in hand. Our approach takes shape through the design of the property, the equipment we choose and our everyday actions.

Designing with the climate
A bioclimatic approach guides the design of our spaces: considering Raiatea’s light, airflow and climate to combine comfort with thoughtful use of resources.
Choosing suitable materials and equipment
The project brings together contemporary materials and equipment suited to the island’s constraints and local ways of life, with attention to durability and guest comfort.
Managing energy and water more efficiently
Solar energy production, energy-efficient equipment and careful water management all contribute to this approach.
Reducing waste
Waste reduction, sorting and recycling are part of the practices in place across the property. We also work to prevent waste in our daily activities.
Building local connections
Whenever possible, we buy from local, responsible suppliers to support the island’s skills and expertise and avoid unnecessarily long supply chains.
Welcoming everyone
We aim to offer everyone an open, thoughtful and respectful welcome, without placing gender-based expectations or roles on our guests.
